Friday the 13th: The Game is a 1v7 asymmetrical multiplayer title by Gun Media and Illfonic.

One player is randomly selected to play as Jason, while the remaining seven are tasked with surviving the night.

I've been playing since launch and a ton has changed, so here's my updated guide.

As a counselor, you'll need to find a weapon and defensive tools such as pocketknives, firecrackers, and a first aid spray.

Any weapon is better than nothing, but some are definitely more powerful than others.

Refer to the chart below for counselor weapon strengths and weaknesses.

If you find a cabin with a radio tower, the CB radio will be inside. This can be used to call Tommy Jarvis.

Generally, the second player to either die or escape will respawn as Tommy, who starts with a shotgun, pocketknife, and a first aid spray.

He also has 10/10 stats, so he has a much better chance of stunning Jason and can repair and run very quickly. He is also the only playable character that can kill Jason-but more on that in a minute.

You'll spend the next 20 minutes moving from cabin to cabin, trying to keep your fear from elevating and finding a way to escape. There are several ways to do this.

1. Escape by car

You'll need to find a battery, gas can, and keys.

Once these parts have been installed, you need only start the vehicle and escape via the exit. (Jason can hear when the car is started, regardless of its location on the map)

2. Escape by boat

Less work is required here than with the car. You'll need to find the propeller and gas can. No keys are needed and the boat starts silently, unlike the car.

3. Escape with the Police

If the fuse is found, it can be installed at the cabin with the sparking electrical box. Once you have installed the part, get inside the cabin and locate the phone.

It takes a few seconds to notify the police by phone, and they will arrive 5 minutes from when the call is placed.

(if the player making the call has the "My dad is a cop" perk, the wait time is decreased significantly, depending on the perk's level) You will then need to make your way to the exit.

4. Survive the night

Even if you are unable to find the needed parts for escape or simply get left behind, all is not lost.

If you have firecrackers, a pocketknife and first aid spray, you have a chance. Stay on your toes, and use hiding spots briefly to throw Jason off your trail.

5. Kill Jason

* Tommy Jarvis needs to have been called, and will need to drop his shotgun to carry either a machete or axe.

*Knock Jason's mask off. (as any character)

*You'll need a female character to carry Jason's mask and locate his shack.

Inside, you'll find Pamela Voorhees sweater. (You can do this without picking up Jason's mask, but if you do he will instantly know when the shack is entered and will likely morph there without delay)

*The female counselor should coordinate with Tommy, and activate the sweater when he arrives, freezing Jason in place.

She should then hit Jason in the back of the legs with a high stun weapon, such as a baseball bat. This will cause him to drop to his knees.

*This is when Tommy should strike with the machete or axe, which will land a fatal blow to Jason's head, thus ending the match.

The sweater is a one-time use, so ensure that you are ready before activating it.

Now let's talk fear.

Your character's face will indicate their fear level.

To keep your fright in check, remember to do the following:

1.) Lock/barricade doors.

(when a door is left open/unlocked, it spikes your counselor's fear and will make you a visible target to Jason's sense ability)

2.) Keep your friends close.

(while they can sometimes be a liability, remaining in close proximity to other counselors helps to keep your fear in check)

3.) Use a flashlight.

(if you are in the woods, in a cabin with the power cut, or by yourself, a flashlight will help to keep your fear from skyrocketing)

4.) Grab a weapon.

(No matter what it is, your counselor's fear won't increase as fast if you have something to defend yourself with)

5.) When you see a dead body, your counselor's fear will increase quite a bit. However,if you get a perk called "Ice Cold" it will help with this.

6.) Fear has a lasting effect. Once it increases, it will not go back down to zero.

Once it is at 100%, the screen will darken, and your items and minimap will disappear. (There is a rare perk called "nerves of steel" that can help with this as well)

7.) Sprinting should be used as a last resort. Stamina is very limited, so it would be wise to conserve it until Jason is after you.

Jogging is almost as fast and if your counselor has a composure level of 7 or better, Jason won't be able hear you jog.

If you do have to sprint, remember to stop every so often to let your stamina rebuild and to re-assess your surroundings.

Combat:

You can enter combat stance to fight Jason (or another counselor, if need be). Click the right stick to enter combat stance, and either swing (RT) or dodge by moving the control stick in any direction while locked on.

Dodge uses a fair amount of stamina, so be careful.

Traps:

Bear traps can be found in most cabins, and this can buy you a few precious seconds to get away from Jason.

The best strategy I've found is to approach the door from the side, and for maximum coverage, place the trap in the middle of the doorframe.

Hiding:

Hiding from Jason can be effective, as long as he does not see you enter the hiding spot. You can hide under beds, in outhouses, closets and inside of tents.

If you can see Jason while hiding, he will be able to hear your character whispering to themselves in fear and will find you quickly. However, if Jason is chasing someone else he likely won't notice due to the noise their character makes whilst being pursued.

Traversal:

Be careful not to accidentally sprint to a window to climb through unless it's open, as throwing yourself through a window will damage you, limiting movement and causing your fear to rise.

Broken windows will hurt you and can kill you if your health is low enough. (even when climbing through slowly)

Team Killing:

Team killing with weapons has been disabled in public matches, though you can still be killed by the car and bear traps.

Beware: team killing is completely active within private matches.

Item recovery:

If another counselor escapes/dies with parts or items, they will wash up on the beach nearest to where the counselor escaped/perished.

Pamela/Jarvis tapes:

In addition to the items we've already discussed, both Pamela and Jarvis tapes can be found in drawers around the map. These are rare, and are accessible through the main menu.

These are basically pieces of previously unrevealed Friday the 13th lore, covering Pamela's backstory, (including how she met Jason's Father) and the Jarvis tapes explore what Tommy was doing between and after his appearances in the films.

There has been a lot of speculation as to how these are found, and the devs at one point actually said that "there may be a trick to finding them."

I've only found two tapes so far, and both in the last month. I found them within the first few moments of the match as well-at random, and in drawers.

The only 'trick' I have found is to search the cabin closest to you as soon as the match starts and hope for the best.

Now that we've covered the basics as a counselor, let's talk Jason gameplay.

You'll start the match in Jason's cabin, first seen in Friday The 13th: Part 2.

There you will see Pamela Voorhees' severed head, sitting atop the infamous shrine from the movies.

On the walls opposite, you should see two sharp metal objects which Jason can pull and use as throwing knives. (These can be found all over each map)

Some Jasons can carry more knives than traps, and vice versa. The same goes for abilities.

For instance, Part 3 Jason can run, and has better grip and weapon strength. But he's also more easily stunned, and has both weaker sense and stalk.

You'll start with the morph ability, which enables you to select any point on your map and teleport directly to it.

As you can see on Jason's map, the phone and electric boxes (needed for power/to use the phone/radio) are shown, as well as vehicles and cabins.

The first thing I do at the beginning of the match is trap the shit out of the phone box.

Then I usually travel to the electrical boxes and kill the power around the camp, which elevates counselors fear and makes them easier to sense.

Now it's time to hunt.

Be relentless. Pursue the counselors using their fear, sound indication and by paying attention to auditory cues such as an electrical sparking noise (indicating that a counselor is attempting a repair) or a starting engine.

You can kill counselors in three different types of ways. The first is by simply swinging your weapon.

The second is by picking them up with LT and then by hitting the corresponding button when the context cue appears in the lower right hand portion of the screen.

Bingo.

The third method is context killing.

This is achieved by picking a counselor up and then carrying them to a spot (ie, door, coat rack, tree stump, etc) which shows a button prompt.

(Jason is now able to use the following household items as environmental kills: stove top, boom box, kitchen knife (throat slit + stab) and screw driver.

Now, back to the hunt.

it's a good idea to destroy doors and windows along your way. Make things as difficult as possible for the counselors.

This ensures that you will be able to track the counselors regardless of where they run, and will create a great deal more fear due to their lack of safety/fallback options.

The second power Jason acquires is sense, which allows you to see counselors based on their fear level.

The third ability you unlock is shift, which allows you to move rapidly over short distances.

The last ability is stalk, which enables you to silence the telltale music that plays when you are near counselors. You can use this to sneak up on them and catch them by surprise.

Jason will acquire rage halfway through the match. Rage enables you to break down doors and walls by walking right through them, you can break fences, and also spot virtually anyone on the map with a fear level. Rage also builds faster if Jason takes damage throughout the match.

If you have a counselor or two left alive and cannot find them, try killing the remaining power boxes. Then hit the campsites and eventually, beds and closets.

Hopefully this guide has been helpful to those reading it. I will be expanding upon it as new content is released.

Come for the memories, stay for the murder.
